INJUNCTION FILED BEFORE QUEBEC SUPERIOR COURT TO REINSTATE
PIERREFONDS LAND AS AGRICULTURAL
COMPLAINT ABOUT IMPROPER LOBBYING FILED WITH QUEBEC
MONTREAL, July 8th 2015 – A citizen of the Montreal borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro and spokesperson for Sauvons L’Anse-à-l’Orme, Ms. Susan Stacho, is filing a request before the Superior Court of Quebec to annul the current zoning of a key section of wet meadowland in western Pierrefonds. The Legacy Project, an organization dedicated to the legal defense of the environment, is also a party to this action.
The land in question lies at the heart of a 185 hectare area targeted for the massive residential development recently announced by the City of Montreal.
This legal action aims to reinstate the land to its original agricultural zoning and also asks for a permanent injunction forbidding subdivision of this environmentally important territory slated for destruction. A copy of the action is included in the press kit.
A complaint has also been filed today with the Quebec Lobbying Commissioner regarding the activities of the developers and their lobbyists, and includes a complaint with the Bureau de l’inspecteur général de la Ville de Montréal. A copy of the complaint is also included in the press kit.
On Friday June 25, 2015, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre announced a massive development project of 5,000 to 6,000 housing units in Pierrefonds. The project was immediately criticized for destroying 185 hectares of wetland meadows also known as the ‘Kestrel Fields’.
The injunction request stresses that the Coderre administration is continuing with a development project inherited from the Zampino-Tremblay municipal administration, an outdated project that promotes building in an ecologically sensitive zone and which contradicts the city’s stated concern with protecting wetlands. This development also contradicts Mayor Coderre’s recently announced commitment to increasing protected green spaces on the island to 10%.
With this injunction request, Montreal citizens are acting proactively to use their legal rights to defend the environment and the quality of life of all Montrealers — those living now and all those to come.
